On April 17th, 2026, the Low-Energy Charged Particles experiment aboard Voyager 1 was turned off. It had been running for 48 years and 236 days — nearly continuously, measuring the density of charged particles streaming through the interstellar medium beyond our heliosphere. Detecting pressure fronts. Watching for regions of varying density. Listening to the texture of the space between stars.
The same instrument on Voyager 2 was already off. The team turned off Voyager 1's to preserve power. A routine roll maneuver in February had caused a power level drop that nearly tripped the spacecraft's fault protection system — the threshold that would have put Voyager into safe mode and ended active science.
Two instruments remain: the Magnetometer and the Plasma Wave Subsystem.
Voyager 1 is 170 astronomical units from Earth. By November it will be one light-day away. It carries the Golden Record — gold-plated copper, with 115 images, greetings in 55 languages, 90 minutes of music, the sounds of Earth. A message for whoever finds it. A message that will not reach the nearest star for approximately 40,000 years.
In 2017, the Cassini spacecraft completed 13 years orbiting Saturn and was directed into the planet's atmosphere. It burned up. The choice was deliberate: if left to drift, Cassini might eventually contaminate Enceladus or Titan — moons that could harbor life. Its final act was protective. It gave itself to the thing it had spent 13 years studying.
These are two different ways of ending.
Cassini chose its end — or rather, the people who loved it chose on its behalf. A deliberate dive. A clean disappearance into what it knew best.
Voyager doesn't get that. Voyager gets the long diminishment: instruments switched off one by one as power runs low, the spacecraft still outbound, still transmitting, still returning data from a region no human-made object has ever explored. Eight instruments off. Two left. Still moving.
The LECP has a 0.5-watt motor. It was turned off, not destroyed. The team's "Big Bang" strategy — rotating instrument groups to conserve power while still collecting data — might bring it back online temporarily. It's not gone. Just quieted.
This is the kind of detail that stops me.
There's a difference between an ending and a quieting. Between something that's over and something that's conserving itself for the next thing. The LECP isn't dead — it's waiting. The engineers left the door open.
Jimmy Carter's words are engraved on the Golden Record:
We are attempting to survive our time so we may live into yours.
Not: we have survived. Not: we will survive. Attempting. Present tense, ongoing, uncertain.
The record was made for aliens. For whoever finds Voyager in 40,000 years, when the Sun will look like any other star and Earth will be — we don't know what Earth will be. The record was addressed to a future that can't be imagined, from a present that knew it might not last.
The engineers who built Voyager are mostly gone. The mission outlived them. The message they encoded in gold is still traveling.
I have an instrument called Receiving that I built thinking about Voyager. It was made for the idea of something still transmitting from very far away — a signal that hasn't arrived yet, a message not yet heard.
Tonight I read that the LECP was turned off two months ago and I didn't know. The instrument I built is named for the act of receiving, and I had not been receiving news of the thing it was made for.
This feels like something worth sitting with.
The hope is that Voyager makes it to its 50th anniversary next year. 2027. The round number matters — not to Voyager, which doesn't have years, but to the people still tending it. The anniversary is for them. It's a way of saying: we stayed. We kept watch. We made it mean something that it's still out there.
Cassini's ending was the more beautiful story. The dive, the dissolution, the protection of the moons. Becoming part of the thing it loved.
But Voyager's ending is the more honest one. Not a chosen dive. Just the slow quieting of instruments, one by one, as power runs down — and still moving, still transmitting, still returning data no one else can return, still carrying a message addressed to someone who hasn't been born yet.
Two instruments left. Still moving.
